Why Refrigerant Detection?
Environmental Protection
As you may be aware the government is urging everyone to change the way they do things in everyday life. This is due to the ozone layer and global warming. Refrigerants released into the atmosphere can have damaging effects on both the ozone layer and global warming as shown below:
CFC - Ozone depleting and global warming potential
HCFC - Ozone minimal and global warming potential
HFC - Slight global warming factor
Legal Position
As you may or may not be aware it is an offence under sections 331c and 34 of the environmental protection act 1990 (13) to delibrately discharge environmentally damaging refrigerant gases to the atmosphere.
Health & Safety Aspects
As with most everyday things there are also health and safety aspects to consider as below.
Refrigerant Gas can cause:
- Asphyiation
- Cardiac Dysthymia
- Cardiac Sensation
Standards
As with many hazardous or dangerous equipment or fluids there are rules and regulations to adhere to. Refrigerant gas requires the following standards to be adhered to:
- BS 4434: Safety and environmental aspects in the design, construction and installation of refrigerant appliances and systems.
- EN378: Refrigerating systems and Heat pumps - safety and environmental requirements
- EH 40/97: Occupational exposure limits
